The Velasco House

Built in the 1850s, the adobe house got its notoriety from Carlos Velasco. He and his wife lived there from 1878 till 1914 when Carlos passed away. It is said that he has never left.

He started a Spanish newspaper in the house and eventually turned it into an esteemed publication. He was the publisher until 1914.

After his death the windows and doors were boarded up, termites almost wrecked the wood and the roof started sagging.

The new owners accepted the daunting task of restoring the Velasco house. Shortly after they began working on it, one of the owners said that he witnessed the appearance of the head and shoulders of a glowing figure floating in the air in one of the bedrooms. It was the bedroom behind the room that was used for the pressroom. He reported that it looked like the upper torso of a Mexican man hovering about eight feet above the ground. Even though the room was dark he was able to identify the apparition as being Carlos Velasco.

There have been three other sightings in different parts of the house. Brown, one of the owners, and a friend were headed towards the back door when they saw the vaporous image of an older Mexican gentleman standing in the doorway. It was looking right at them.

The other two said that a younger Hispanic man had appeared near a doorway, and again moving across the living room.

Since then clocks have been strangely reset and furniture has rearraged itself.
