Rockport, Maine, formerly Goose River, is the home of a ghost that is fondly called the "Pitcher Man." It was hit hard throughout the Revelutionary War in which the British stormed through causing all kind of trouble. The people had a hostile view of them.
A man named William Richardson vowed revenge. A privateer had taken a British ship and was being chased up the east coast. He wound up on the Goose River and found Richardson who saw a chance to get even with the British by helping the pirate in hiding the ship.
Richardson started a party in order to celebrate his victory. The whole town was invited. Richardson became a real party animal and helped the rest of the town in getting drunk by carrying two pitchers and filling everyone glasses.
He left the party and in his drunken state offered three travelers drinks. He said to them that everyone had a good reason to party in that he had spited the British.
He didn't know that the men were on the side of the British. The knocked hom down and crushed him with their horses, leaving him to die.
Since that fateful night people crossing the bridge have said to have seen a drunken man stumbling across the bridge. When they ask if he is ok he hands them a pitcher of beer. Hundreds of people have said they seen him. He continues to party today.
