Proctor is located in western Adair County a few miles from the Arkansas border. It's small size dosen't preclude it from being haunted.
A house in the village had been built by a man who died from "unknown circumastances." Before long, the community knew the man's ghost remained in the attic of his old house.
An older couple bought the house. They knew the stories and so did their grown children. One of their daughters came with her children to visit. A couple of days with Grandpa and Grandma...and a ghost.
The girl and her mother stayed up late talking one night. When they finally went to bed, she settled into the front bedroom which was seperated from her parents bedroom by a shared bathroom. She layed down in the bed and turned off the lights. A little while later she heard the springs of her mother's bed squeak. Then footsteps on the linoleum floor of the back bedroom. Then across her carpet. She thought her mother had come to tell her something.
She was puzzled when her mother didn't say anything. "Mother, what do you want?" she whispered, trying not to wake her child. There was no reply. The presence remained. Again she asked, this time in a full voice. "MOTHER, WHAT DO YOU WANT!" From the distant bedroom came her mother's reply, "What did you say?" She had been in bed the whole time.
