THE GREY MAN

The Brown Lady of Raynham Hall
"I'm just a ghost in this house
I'm shadow upon these walls,
As quietly as a mouse
I haunt these halls."

- Allison Krauss, Ghost in This House

The Grey Man Before every major hurricane in the past hundred years, the residents of Pawley's Island have told of meetings with the infamous Grey Man. He warns them of the coming peril and suggests that they leave the island. If they listen to his warning, their houses survive intact. If they don't listen to him, they suffer a large amount of damage.

According to legend he was a resident of the area who died an untimely death. He had been overseas for months and when he came back wanted to get back to his fiancée as soon as possible. He took a shortcut through the marshland and ran into quicksand which ended his life.

A couple of days later, as his fincée was walking on the beach, she saw the figure of her fiancée and ran to him. Instead of the happy reunion she expected, he gave her a warning to leave the island to avoid great danger. Her and her family did as he had said, and missed a powerful hurricane.

Ever since then the Grey Man has continued warning people when danger is near.
