"The most infamous story of South Carolina is about the Blue Lady of Hilton Head Island, who is said to haunt the island's original lighthouse. The story is that she waited for her lover to return from sea, but he never came home. She walked into the ocean and drowned herself and has haunted the island ever since.
Some fifteen years ago my brother and I hiked through the woods into Palmetto Dunes Plantation to find the lighthouse. Next to it was a small concrete temple with thousands of names written on its interior walls. The legend goes that if you etch your name, the Blue Lady will visit you. Needless to say my brother etched his name. That night we were visited.
It was terribly windy that night, and broken limbs knocked out power in Sipyard Plantation where we lived. My brother and I, home alone, went into the kitchen to find candles. Outside the window there was a blue glow and the figure of a woman. Our house was on stilts, so the window was at least twenty feet from the ground. "-Lindsay Coleman
