The Axeman's Bridge is located near Old Post Road in Crete, Illinois. As the story goes there was a family that lived near the bridge in the 60s. The "Axeman" lived there with his wife, mother-in-law, and his children. They were always arguing until one night he went into a blind rage.
He went to the bridge with his mother-in-law and daughter and butchered them with an axe. Then he returned to the house and murdered the rest of his family, leaving the bodies on the lawn. He burned the house down and it was reported that he died in the flames - even though his remains were never located.
Ever since then odd things have been heard and seen. At certain times the sounds of a man and a woman arguing have been heard, then a woman screaming. Where the house once stood people have heard moaning and crying. Others have seen figures running through the forest and heard the harsh sound of an axe being banged on the metal bridge. There have even been reports of lights of a house shimmering through the woods, even though no house was there.
The bridge is still there but it is in bad shape and not safe to use.
